Week #3 : Crumbs Bake Shop

Week #3 rolled around and I’ll admit, I was in a panic trying to decide where to go. The week got away from me much too quickly and I hadn’t even done any research on my next target, except that it have cupcakes of course!

Saturday afternoon I was lucky enough to go out to lunch with a neighbor from St. Louis who moved away when I was still in elementary school. It was so much fun to see her after so long! After telling her about my blog she enthusiastically told me that there was a cupcake place right down the street that she wanted to try. That was as good of an excuse as any so we headed over as soon as we were done with lunch.

The cupcake bakery turned out to be Crumbs Bake Shop, a chain here on the east coast. Although my original intention was to find the best independent local D.C. bakery, the fact that there are chain cupcake stores is a testament to the growing trend that cupcakes have become, so, I decided to give it a try.

The display was certainly stunning, the pastry case stocked full of elaborate cupcakes. My eyes couldn’t stay in one place as I observed each flavor and the decor it entailed. There was the cookie dough cupcake, with cookies on top, the s’more cupcake tempting due to the fond memories it evoked. Unable to decide which one would be best, I took the advice of the young man behind the counter and got a cupcake called Bryant Park.

This cupcake is seriously, the ultimate of all cupcakes. The cake is a chocolate cake, with a chocolate mousse filling. The icing is a vanilla buttercream, topped with white chocolate shavings and then chocolate cake crumbs on top of that. This is what it looked like.

Cupcake overload for sure!

We decided to give this tasty treat a try during the SIWJ Super Bowl Party hosted (appropriately) by the only two guys in the program, Samir and Jared. Here’s what we decided.

Appearance: Crumbs does a fantastic job of making beautiful cupcakes that make the customer’s jaw drop, and this one was certainly no exception!

Frosting to cake ratio: (a new category added by the request of my classmates)A little high considering the amount of space the mousse inside takes up and takes away from the percentage of cake throughout.

Frosting: Soft, moist and full of vanilla flavor! For those who like white chocolate, the shavings add an extra sweetness that can be delightful and help offset the chocolate overload below.

Cake: Incredible! I’m starting to think that the bigger cupcakes have a big impact on the quality of cake. This cupcake was easily large enough to be sampled by at least 6 of us, henceforth, a very large cupcake. The cake was moist with the perfectly satisfying chocolaty taste, not overwhelming but extremely pleasing.

Overall, here’s the report card:

Now you might ask, why did it only get an ‘A’ Amy? Obviously the report car

d averages up to an ‘A+’. Well, I know I’ve never been

good at math but that has nothing to do with this. Obviously each of the pieces were amazing, I explained that in detail up above, but I have to admit, the phrase “you can have too much of a good thing” can really be true.

Each piece individually was amazing, but with the rich chocolate cake, combined with the rich chocolate mousse inside, the sweet and creamy vanilla icing with white chocolate and more was indeed a bit much. That does not stop me from saying however, th

at it doesn’t surprise me that this shop caught on all along the east coast. Over the top or not, Crumbs Bake Shop is certainly worth checking out!

Until next week, 3 cheers for cupcakes!
